2008 Iron Editor Contest Rules

Iron Editor Contest Brief

The Iron Editor contest is convention organized competition where a small pool of preselected contestants will be asked to create an AMV in a fixed amount of time. This AMV will be composed using video provided by the contestant, and audio provided by the contest organizer immediately prior to the commencement of timed competition. Once the competition time has elapsed, contestants will author and present their videos for judging, with a winner being decided and subsequently announced at the AMV contest award show.

General Contest Rules

1. All contestants must be registered attendees of the con and must be able to present their registration badge if asked to do so.

2. All contestants shall provide their own complete computer (including all necessary peripheral devices and cabling) and software for the purpose of editing. AnimeIowa, the AI tech staff, and the AMV Contest organizer is not responsible to provide any computer equipment to contestants.

3. AnimeIowa will provide extension cords to supply contestant computers with access to outlets. Any contestant desiring an uninterruptable power supply system must provide their own.

4. If possible, contestant desktops will be mirrored to projectors for the benefit of spectators. If this is done, AI shall provide projectors for this purpose. AI is not required to provide projectors and all participants MUST provide their own monitor. If projectors are made available and a contestant wishes to project their desktop, AI will provide RCA cables to connect your computer to the projector. RCA cables are the "red-white-yellow" type connectors used on dvd players. We do not have adapters to support other types of input.

5. Contestants shall provide all video data used in the contest, subject to the Video Rules.

6. NO HENTAI.

7. The length of the produced AMV shall not be excessively longer or shorter then the provided audio.

Video Rules

1. The quantity of video used by contestants in their AMV shall be constrained by means of the combined running time of the videos used.

2. Contestants are limited to using no more then 8 hours of source video.

3. Video may originate from any combination of movies, episodes, and bonus features from any combination of anime titles.

4. All video files used must be counted in their entirety when calculating the amount of video. It is not permissible, for example, to count only 4 minutes out of an 8 minute video file. The entire file must be counted, or it must be sliced down prior to the contest.

5. Video files are not required to contain whole episodes.

6. AnimeIowa does not want to know how you obtained your video.

Audio Rules

1. Audio will be provided to contestants immediately prior to the beginning of the timed contest, in Mp3 and audio CD format.

2. The provided audio MUST be audible, and in its entirety, in the final AMV.

Contest Entry Rules

1. Prior to the convention, an entry form will be made available to convention attendees.

2. Contestants and reserve contestants shall be selected from the pool of submitted entries and notified of their selection status by means of email.

3. If a selected contestant fails to respond to communications in a timely fashion or appear at the event, a reserve contestant will be offered their spot, and the contestant will be placed on the reserve list.

4. Selection as a contestant does not assure the right to compete. Contestants shall be expected to respond to all official contest email messages within one week or their status as a contestant will be in jeopardy.

5. Selection as a contestant in the Iron Editor contest is independent of the convention registration process; selection DOES NOT assure registration.

6. The entry form will have a section pertaining to the ability of the contestant to mirror their desktop using RCA or S-Video. This will weigh on the selection process.

7. The entry form will have a section for the entrant to provide a portfolio of video links illustrating their past works. Quantity, quality, and time between films will all weigh on the selection process. The contest is looking for individuals who have a demonstrated capacity to turn out several good films in the span of a couple months.
